The Davis Cup, a famed tennis competition, will be hosted at Petco Park this year, with well-known athletes in attendance such as Andy Murray, John Isner and Sam Querrey to name a few.  With more than 100 years of tradition, Davis Cup is the premier team competition in men’s professional tennis as well as the largest annual international team competition in sport with 130 nations competing in Davis Cup play.

The games will start on Friday, Jan. 31 and last until Sunday, Feb. 2. Friday matches start at 11 a.m., Saturday at 12 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m. It’s United States versus Great Britain, and the city is invited to come witness the rivalry.

Each year the World Group competition consists of four single elimination rounds with each tie being contested either home or away depending on which country hosted the previous tie.

Team matches are played over the three day period with two singles matches on the first day (Friday, 1/31), one doubles match on the second day (Saturday, 2/1) and two singles matches on the third day (Sunday, 2/2). The first country to win three matches wins the tie and secures a place in the next round.

Each team will be comprised of four players and while each team’s respective captain has until ten days before the tie to nominate their team. Matches will be broadcast live on Tennis Channel in the United States with international distribution to be determined.

A special treat for spectators is, unlike the traditional tennis silence, partisan cheering is highly encouraged. “This is a contest of national pride and brings out very loud crowds cheering for each nation. It is unlike any tennis match you have ever seen if you have not attended one of these before,” said Bill Kellogg, President of La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, who is organizing the event.
