Seaside Racing Down at Old Del Mar

Aniconic horseracing event, which has boasted Hollywood names such as Bing Crosby, Pat O’ Brien, and Ava Gardner, the Del Mar Races have been considered one of the most famous, fashionable, and thrilling traditions in the West. With more than 45,000 race fans expected this year, the spirit of Del Mar Racing season is unlike any other.

This year, Del Mar will celebrate its seventy-fifth season of horse racing beginning on July 17 with Opening Day and finishing on Sept. 3. Fans are welcome to participate in Opening Day festivities which will consist of the Hat’s Contest, the Opening Day Party, and the Newcomer’s Seminar for those celebrating their first day at the races – which will continue throughout the racing season. Four O’Clock Fridays will kick off on July 18 and continue every Friday shortly after the final race of the day. Admission is free with a Del Mar Races ticket, and concerts are located west of the Grandstand.

Additional activities will include a Family Fun Day on July 20 with free admission for children 17 and under and free attractions for the entire family. Families are welcome to climb the rock climbing wall, meet and greet a racehorse, create and decorate their very own derby hat, and play in the game zone. There will also be free family weekends in the infield every Saturday and Sunday beginning July 27.

Sample over 100 craft beers on July 26 and Aug. 24 at the Craft Beer Fest which will feature over forty of San Diego’s top-rated beers. Free and Easy Wednesdays will continue this year with free admission to the races every Wednesday. Bring your appetite on Aug. 16 for the gourmet food truck festival featuring fifty food trucks from San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles.
