Fun Family Traditions

The Hydo family has been living in Solana Beach since 2004, but patriarch Chris is actually a third generation resident of the Solana Beach and Del Mar community. In fact all five of Chris’ siblings, as well as his parents, used to live next door to each other, covering six lots. Though his extended family members no longer live on the same street, Chris, his wife Hedi, and their two sons Ben (15) and Jake (13) still retain a familial vibe within their community.

Hedi acknowledged, “We love living here because it has a small town feel. With Chris having his orthodontist practice in the area it is impossible to walk down the street or go out to dinner without running into someone we know!”

Hedi, who is also in the dental industry, teaches at Palomar Community College’s Dental Assisting and Pre-Dental Program, and will soon be taking over as the president of the Teen Volunteers in Action organization. Devoted to developing into community leaders through philanthropy and volunteerism, both Ben and Jake volunteer much of their time toward local philanthropies as part of the organization.

“We love living here because it has a small town feel … it is impossible to walk down the street or go out to dinner without running into someone we know!”

In addition to their philanthropic pursuits, the Hydo sons are also avid lacrosse aficionados, and both Ben and Jake play lacrosse for their schools (Torrey Pines and Earl Warren Middle school, respectively), as well as for the RC Starz competitive club teams. Chris even admitted, “We all love to watch lacrosse games in person and on TV, and this summer our vacation will include watching our boys participate in lacrosse tournaments in Colorado.” Ben also keeps busy playing soccer for the DMCV Sharks competitive club team. Both boys frequently make personalized videos and movies.

As for the parents’ interests, Chris is passionate about surfing, hiking, and golfing, while Hedi revels in her book club activities and painting. As a family, the Hydos enjoy taking cruises, and they camp every year with a close group of local Solana Beach families. In addition, during the summer they have what they call “family sunset dinners” at the beach with their friends.

But the Hydos have one favorite family ritual in particular: eating popcorn! Chris explained, “We have popcorn every night before bed and we even have contests to see who can prepare it with the least number of unpopped kernels!” Never one to waste anything, the Hydos always make the most of their precious moments together.
