Loco for Soccer
John Lococo has always had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. So, he jumped in when he saw an opportunity to combine his interest in sports with his passion for business. “I became deeply involved in youth soccer teams as my children grew up through the sport,” recalled John. It’s been 20 years since he started Soccerloco, an online soccer specialty retailer, and John isn’t slowing down anytime soon. “We have built Soccerloco to a national brand, servicing the local community and beyond,” stated John.
John credits much of the company’s success to the tremendous help he receives from his family members – all of whom are involved in the business. “We are a family-run business from the top down,” said John, who stressed that spending time with his family at Sunday dinners, the beach, and professional sporting events is his top priority.
John and his wife came to settle in Solana Beach when the Lococo kids were grown. “My wife and I started our life together at the beach, moved inland, raised our family, and ultimately moved back,” shared John. “I’ve always loved the coastal communities.” When asked what he enjoys most about Solana Beach, John replied, “I’m walking distance to everything …and enjoy that small town feel.”
Professionally, John is inspired by passionate young soccer players and fans. “Our brand represents the sheer passion and hysterical love for soccer shared by our customers, employees, and partners,” stated John. He finds it rewarding to see young athletes reach their goals with the support of his company. “Soccerloco helps the individuals and youth organizations connect with college scouts, institutions, and in some cases professional clubs,” he explained. “I love to see the success of our efforts.”
Fueled by his own achievements, John has been compelled to pay it forward to the next generation of entrepreneurs by mentoring students at his alma mater, San Diego State University. He also gives back to the Susan G. Komen Foundation through his role as co-founder and sponsor of the Kickin’ It Challenge, a local tournament that helps to bring awareness to breast cancer. “There are also many foundations that have sprung up to bring professional soccer to San Diego,” noted John, “And I get involved with this as much as I can.” He added, “At Soccerloco, we strive to improve the quality of life for all with whom we connect because at the end of the day, that’s what matters the most.”
