Reynolds for Rady Children’s

If Mary Reynolds had one wish, it would be for all of the world’s children to be healthy and safe. So, it’s no wonder that Mary pursues her passion of advocating for the health and well-being of kids by dedicating her time to Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary, an all-volunteer organization comprised of 800 members in 22 units scattered throughout the county. “Our mission is to advocate for, educate about, and raise funds for Rady Children’s Hospital,” Mary shared. “The auxiliary has been in existence since 1954 and has raised over $70 million dollars over the years. We have touched almost every corner of Rady Children’s.”

volunteer_reynolds1Mary became a member of the Del Mar Unit of Rady Children’s Auxiliary over 10 years ago. “I worked within my unit, holding positions like event chair and unit chair,” recalled Mary. Today, she sits on the board of directors as president, overseeing all 22 units of the organization. “I am so proud of the commitment, dedication, and hard work of all of our members,” said Mary. “It’s a dynamic group that raises about $2 million per year.”

With a year and a half left in her term, Mary is proud of all that she and the other members have already accomplished. “Initiating the new position on our board of leadership development director, we have worked to provide training to our volunteers in leadership, fund raising, and public relations,” described Mary. “I’ve also worked to take a one-day event, Kids’ News Day, and work with incredibly talented women and turn that one day into a week of giving.” This “week of giving” will come next January during the organization’s 2nd Annual Fill The Bucket campaign. “Our first year was a smashing success and I have no doubt it will be a major event in San Diego in the coming years,” stated Mary.

Much like the Fill The Bucket Week of Giving event, the upcoming Tee Up for Rady event, a golf tournament at Fairbanks Country Club on June 12, is an auxiliary-wide event. However, each of the 22 units also host their own annual event. The Del Mar Unit will host their event on April 27 at Dolce at the Highlands. Hat’s Off to Children is a luncheon fashion show featuring fashions by TRE. Tickets are available at www.rchadelmar.org.

Mary admits that most of her time is spent volunteering but when she has downtime, she likes to cook and travel with her husband Jim. “I have been married to my husband Jim for almost 40 years,” shared Mary. “We have two wonderful adult children and are very proud of their accomplishments.”

Mary also enjoys her bunco and book clubs and going to the gym. But no other activity seems to fulfill quite like volunteering for Rady Children’s. “We are extremely lucky to have one of the highest ranking children’s hospitals in the world right here in our backyard,” said Mary. “Rady Children’s is leading the way in research and care for any child who needs healthcare services, whether they can afford it or not. No child is turned away.”
