BGCSD Youth of the Year
BGCSD Recognizes Outstanding Local Teen
Seventeen-year-old Jose Becerra was recently named the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito (BGCSD) 2017 Youth of the Year. Jose has been active at the La Colonia Clubhouse in Solana Beach since 2007, which he says has shaped him into the person he is today. “The club has given me the opportunity to experience so many firsts,” Jose shared. “My first bike, first pair of shoes, first soccer ball, first Christmas, first pair of cleats, and the first place that I call my second home.” The club also gave him the opportunity to participate in an internship with DPR Construction last summer, where he learned about the industry and honed his skills. After high school, Jose plans to attend college and study construction management. “These past 10 years at the club have been the greatest years of my life,” he said. “The club has motivated me to keep working on my studies because graduating from college will help me ensure a good life for my family. Most importantly, the club has taught me to live life the best way possible and to make a positive impact on the world and change the lives of others just like Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito created a change in my life.”
BGCSD’s Youth of the Year Celebration acknowledges teens ages 14 through 18 for their achievements in leadership, service, and academic excellence. It is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program and the most esteemed youth leadership awards in the nation. This year’s celebratory event was held at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Infield Pavilion, where guests enjoyed dinner, wine, music, nighttime horse racing, and silent and live auctions.
