The Ballerina & The Jeweler

adv_gemslacosta2In the spring of 1977, Linda was only in her mid 20’s but it was already time to think about retirement. A dancer’s career can be short and after many long tours and too many Nutcrackers, the time had come to hang up her toe shoes. She had traveled the country performing with American Ballet Theater and Hartford Ballet and while it was rewarding in many ways, it was time to settle down.

Dale had been working in the jewelry business in Chicago since he was 16 and he came to California to attend the Gemological Institute. He became a Graduate Gemologist, and after returning to Chicago for one more winter, he knew he wanted to make California his new home. He found a position with a jeweler in Palos Verdes, where Linda had lived with her family since the early 60’s.

That summer, Linda returned home to stay with her family and began thinking about a new career. It was a help wanted sign in the jewelry store window that brought Dale and Linda together. One week after starting her part time job, Dale and Linda went on their first date and they’ve been a team ever since. It didn’t take long for them to fall in love, get married and start a family.

adv_gemslacosta3Forty years later, Dale and Linda are also a team as owners of Gems of La Costa in Carlsbad. They moved to San Diego in 1985 to raise their family and they opened their store in 1989. Together, they’ve built a successful business in the true “mom & pop” tradition. Their children are grown but their “third and most demanding child – the store” keeps them busy. Linda says, “A marriage is two people trying to dance two solos and a pas de deux at the same time, but when you also own and operate a business together, it adds some very special choreography.”
