Suzi Resnik Preserves Del Mar’s Rich History
Suzi Resnik adores Del Mar. She loves the climate, the intellectual and cultural resources, and the people. She also appreciates the location. “Del Mar is so beautiful,” Suzi shared, “I savor the sunsets and am fortunate to live in a home with an ocean view.” In fact, her love for Del Mar is so great that she is extremely involved with the Del Mar Historical Society (DMHS). In particular, she has a passion for Del Mar Voices, the DMHS’s oral history project.
Suzi became involved with the DMHS soon after moving from New York City to Del Mar 23 years ago. She is the past president (2001-2003) and since 1995 has been the director of the Del Mar Voices project. Her experience completing a doctoral dissertation at Columbia University using anthropology and oral history research methods made her an ideal historian for her beloved city. “The DMHS has a marvelous collection of old photos and other memorabilia,” Suzi explained, “and combined with oral histories they provide a rich resource for both community members and visitors of all ages.”
Del Mar Voices strives to document all of Del Mar’s history. “We learn about the history of the community as seen through the eyes of old-timers, former mayors, and community leaders,” Suzi said, “as well as other members of the historical society who have grown up in the community.” The DMHS also participates in the Southwest Oral History Association. “SOHA has given us awards and we are considered a model oral history community,” noted Suzi.
Her love of history doesn’t stop there. Suzi also applies her expertise to her oral history business, called Viewing Voices. She not only employs oral historians, but an audio engineer and a transcriber as well. Clients include San Diego State University and California State University, Northridge.
