5th Annual Event Supports Community Wellness Initiatives
Sunset Beach Run
The 5th Annual Solana Beach Sunset 5K Run/Walk and Wellness Expo, presented in partnership by the City of Solana Beach, Live Well San Diego, and the San Diego County Medical Society, brought more than 500 runners, walkers, teams, and sponsors together for a day of active fun at Fletcher Cove. Family-friendly activities included food and cooking tips, kids zone games, music, dancing, food trucks, and more. The event raised $50,000 for Champions for Health’s community wellness and diabetes prevention programs.
Champions for Health is a nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for medical professionals to volunteer their services for the uninsured, underinsured, or those with limited access to care in San Diego. The Health and Wellness Programs address preventable and chronic diseases through immunizations, screenings, diabetes prevention education, and the Live Well San Diego Speaker’s Bureau. In 2018 alone, over 500 volunteer physicians and healthcare professionals provided 20,000 blood pressure screenings at 160 locations, over 100 healthy living topic presentations throughout the community, and 2,500 free vaccinations at 50 sites. Champions for Health’s diabetes prevention program, a collaborative partnership with the Skinny Gene Project, provides personalized coaching, weekly group meetings, healthy living tips, physical activities, and nutritional counseling over a 12-month period to people with risk factors for developing diabetes.
